Network Analyst

WAN Monitoring, Reporting, and Alerting Tool

MASERGY, a global service provider, offers the Network Analyst tool to their customers as a separately priced (monthly fee) option. Network Analyst is accessible via a Web portal, and provides for the customer a hosted and Web-based traffic monitoring, reporting, and alerting utility specifically for their WAN connections. The product itself leverages embedded capabilities of the vendor's network services and requires no additional hardware or software installations for use by the customer. Rather, it leverages data mirroring capabilities built-into the vendor's service offerings to store packet header information on the vendor's own servers for subsequent viewing and analysis by the customer. The vendor states that information can be viewed down to 15 second increments.

The utility provides for the customer the ability to monitor and analyze their WAN traffic in multiple ways; including near real-time views and reports of application, bandwidth, and data exchange performance. Access to the utility is through a Web portal; through which the vendor states that customers can view detailed traffic metrics and generate customized reports. Traffic can be displayed by application, IP address, port, protocol, and QoS level; and threshold alarms can additionally be set enabling the triggering of visual and E-mail alerts at customer-specified application usage levels, sustained port usage, sustained voice and video usage, port packet drops, and video/voice packet drops. The vendor states that the service requires no bandwidth usage and has no impact on network latency.

A key new feature in the latest release of Network Analyst is the addition of the Active Network Map, which displays the quantity, quality and content of traffic among the enterprise's top 15 network sites. The map utilizes color coding to visually indicate traffic patterns and direction, bandwidth utilization and recent bandwidth changes; and supports drill-down capabilities for the examination of a specific site's or IP address's activities.

Other new features in the latest version include an application profiler, support for customer defined site-names, filtering enhancements, and the aforementioned support for dropped packet thresholds.

Network Analyst is available now. Contact MASERGY for further information.
