OmniSwitch 6400

Stackable Switches for SMEs, Branches

The OmniSwitch 6400 product line is a collection of stackable 24 or 48 port switches targeted primarily to SMEs, branch office deployments, or to Service Providers (where they would be used primarily as CPE gear). Both PoE and non-PoE versions of the switches are offered, and all of the switches can be deployed in virtually managed stacks of up to 8 switches, maximum. Switch configurations can be mixed and matched in the stack, and each model includes a pair of 10 Gig ports dedicated to stack communications.

All models contain some combination of standard and combo (SFP/RJ45 Mini-GBIC) ports; the all fiber models include 22 SFP Fiber (100 or 1000BaseX) and 2 combo ports, while the other models include 20 or 44 10/100/1000 and 4 combo ports. Both PoE and non-PoE models are available for all but the Fiber only switches; and the PoE models themselves are sold in versions with high (510W) or low (360W) power supplies (the higher power supplies enable a higher PoE power output per port; in the 48 port PoE switch, a maximum of 5.4W of PoE power can be delivered per port, while the 24 port PoE offers up to 15.4W per port). All models feature redundant power supplies, with the Fiber only model offered with either AC or DC power.

Other features of the switches include support for VRRP and RIP; support for user authentication, quarantine VLANs, ACLs, encryption, and DoS protection; RoHS, WEEE, and NEBS Level 3 compliance; support for L2 switching and basic L3 routing; hot swappable power supplies (both in the PoE models, and the secondary power supply only in the non-PoE models); image-based rollbacks (configurations and firmware); support for IPv4 and IPv6; QoS features; support for OAM and IPTV multicast VLANs; and support for management via the vendor's OmniVista 2500 and 2700, WebView, and 5620 SAM apps.

The 6400 series switches are somewhat similar to the OmniSwitch 6850 switches; but lack the advanced Layer 3 routing (OSPF, IS-IS, BGP) features of the 6850 as well as the 10 Gig uplinks (the 10 Gig ports on the 6400 are dedicated to switch stacking).

The OmniSwitch 6400s are available now; pricing ranges from $2,095 to $5,295. Contact Alcatel-Lucent for further information.
