StorBankXL

Linux Based Boxes Combine NAS and iSCSI Features

The StorBankXL line of storage appliances from Dynamic Network Factory are "hybrid" storage appliances in that they support both file (NAS) and block level (iSCSI) data access. The appliances range in size from 1 to 3U (tower models are also available) and in storage capacity from 4 to 16 drives.

All of the models are based on and include the vendor's Linux-based dedicated file server operating system, which the vendor states is optimized such that application and file I/O are separated. Management is via a Web (browser) based GUI (password and SSL protected).

Features of the appliances include snapshot storage, and file/volume replication capabilities over multiple or redundant pathways between storage devices. New to the devices is support for NDMP based backup, as well as the ability to designate volumes or file shares as WORM storage.

Seven models are available in the StorBankXL line, with common hardware features including SATA drives (the vendor states that support will be added for SAS drives in 10k and 15k flavors this month) and dual 10/100/1000 ports. CPU choices range from a single 3.0GHz Intel Pentium 4 Processor (model 40p) to single or dual Intel Quad-Core Xeon Processors (model 1600qz); while standard memory ranges from 1 to 2 GB (which can be upgraded to 2 or 4 GB, depending on model). Other differences include hot-swap power supplies (available in all but the lowest model, the 40p) and the inclusion of internal DVD ROM floppy disk drives (the lowest model includes only a CD-ROM drive). All are rackmount (1 to 3U) models with the exception of the 40t and 80tz, which are tower designs.

Pricing for the StorBankXLs starts at $3,300. Contact the vendor for further information.
