Clearwell E-Discovery Platform

For Discovery and Analysis of E-mail, Document Content

The vendor's flagship offering, the Clearwell E-Discovery Platform (formerly known as the Clearwell Intelligence Platform and the Email Intelligence Platform) is targeted to enterprise deployments and provides a search, discovery, and analysis interface to information stores, including E-mail and file shares. The platform provides automated analysis of documents, E-mail messages and content, classifying and organizing them such that they can be searched and examined in a variety of ways for compliance and/or investigatory purposes.

The platform's architecture is such that it is deployed as a 2U appliance outside the E-mail flow, does not require the addition of software to the clients or servers, does not create a separate information store, and does not require the moving of mail boxes. Rather, the product works in conjunction with the organization's existing E-mail/document stores; indexing the data in place and not replicating it. Duplicate information is automatically identified and treated as a single entity.

Both messages and their attachments are analyzed; and the vendor notes that the platform is able to index and analyze documents on any accessible directory with support for about 400 document types.

The platform analyzes the messages in the message stores, examining and correlating such metrics as recipients, replies, forwards, cc's, and subject headers in combination with organizational data (for Microsoft Exchange, the platform can optionally crawl Active Directory data for the retrieval of user aliases, departments, locations, and distribution lists) and the dynamic extraction of content via linguistic and statistical analysis algorithms--a process the vendor calls Dynamic Content Analysis--towards the goal of providing a Web-based interface within which information auditors can analyze and organize the information contained within the messages.

Analytical features of the interface include topical analysis; personalized dashboards; thread-based message analysis; individual and group-to-group communication flows; and specific search capabilities including searches based on senders, recipients, group-to-group flows, direction, subject, attachment, date range, tag values, and comments--with boolean, wildcard, and fuzzy searches all supported.

New features in the latest platform release include:

- Support for distributed, multi-appliance clusters and a centrally managed, "case-based" architecture

- Support for de-duplication across an entire data set

- Support for Electronic Discovery Reference Model (EDRM) XML

- Expanded support for data sources and foreign languages

The Clearwell E-Discovery Platform is available now, with pricing starting at $65,000 for 100 GB of analyzed data.
